Mark Twain once said, “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Some wonder what he meant. I keep it simple, college is not your real education, life is. You’re going to be living in the real world a lot longer than you’re going to be in anyone’s university and so learning about life is more important than you’re class work will ever be. Your degree is a means to an end, treat it like one of many tools in your toolbox.

A joyless half-smile spread across the soldier’s face.

“You think you have a choice?”

“If you don’t bring back this prince you’ll live a long life Kevan McLeon, and you’ll regret everyday of it, because I’ll have your family killed.”

I watched the color drain from Allegra’s face. Did I share her same lifeless expression? I couldn’t, every part of me felt alive and in pain. Raw. My heart throbbed like a wound and my veins tightened every muscle in my body. An alien voice escaped from her lips, “I don’t…his family…what do you want us to do?”

“Varsity guy smiled and joked and ignored the others, willing her and her alone to like him. My fist tightened, making my knuckles turn white as he made his move.
Sunshine was a high school oddity–an individual–and everyone liked her for it.

And that, that was the first problem. She was just too likable. Just look at how nice she’d been to Varsity Guy. Part of me knew she was just being polite, but the way her friends had swooned over him left a raw breathless   feeling in my chest. It wasn’t because they thought he was cute, most girls were silly enough to like anyone with muscles.

Nope, it was because no matter how many matches I won, I knew Varsity Guy had something I didn’t. He was exactly the type her friends and everybody else thought she should be with…I wasn’t.”
